The body of research on cannabidiol, CBD oil benefits, THC and other cannabinoids has grown exponentially in the past decade. CBD oil is a natural remedy that boasts a wide range of health benefits. Today I am discussing five science-backed health benefits of CBD oil and why I personally use it every day.
I received free products from Bluhm CBD to review. All opinions expressed in this post are based on my personal view.
Why I Started Taking CBD Oil
There are 14 million people in the United States who daily battle a disease that can turn their lives upside down. And I am one of the 14 million. I live with an incurable autoimmune disease called Hashimoto’s.
Before my diagnosis, I went from traveling the world and being called Wonder Woman, because I successfully juggled so many roles and obligations, to laying on the couch all day feeling exhausted, anxious and achy.
My normally sharp as a tack mind struggled to recall everyday words like “soap” —true story y’all!
After I finally received the correct diagnosis, I made it my mission to not let this disease ruin my quality of life and restore what it took from me.
I researched and tested many different protocols to narrow down every possible medication and supplement that would work cohesively to put my Hashimoto’s in remission. You can read about my journey and my personal Hashimoto’s protocol here.
Since writing that blog post, I have added another essential element to my protocol—CBD oil—and here’s why.
I keep my autoimmune disease in check with by taking my medication and following a strict diet and supplement protocol. But flare-ups are inevitable due to a variety of factors, including environmental stressors and just plain old daily stress. Did I tell you that I am raising a three-year-old daughter and two teenage boys simultaneously? Hello stress!
Therefore, I am always on the lookout for new supplements to prevent or combat flare-up symptoms. During my research I came across the benefits of CBD oil and read about its amazing healing and protective powers. After reading article after article, I was very eager to try CBD oil.
Before I share my personal experience with CBD oil, we’ll dispel common misconceptions about what CBD oil is or isn’t.
CBD, short for Cannabidiol, is a phytocannabinoid. Scientists have identified over 100 phytocannabinoids in cannabis plants like hemp.
Hemp is naturally higher in CBD and contains only trace amounts of THC (the chemical component that has psychoactive effects).
So, first and foremost, since hemp-based CBD oil only contains a trace amount of THC, it will not get you high.
Second, hemp-based CBD oil is legal in all 50 states and is used widely in integrative medicine.
Dr. Anali Dsouza, founder of the District Center for Integrative Medicine in Washington, says “Clinical reports showing its [CBD’s] safety and tolerability allow us to move forward with confidence. We have long known that, in certain circumstances, cannabinoids like CBD can help achieve and support a stable balance in our bodies, also known as homeostasis. CBD is currently used in a wide range of clinical scenarios including cancer, multiple sclerosis, seizure disorders, traumatic brain injuries, insomnia, anxiety and PTSD.”
What CBD Products Do I Use
Now that we have covered the safety and legality of CBD, let’s talk about my personal experience and what products I use.
I need my CBD to be gluten-free and organically grown.
This is why I love the Bluhm brand! Not only are Bluhm products organic and gluten-free, they are also lab-tested and grown in Colorado.
I can rest assured that I am using top-quality products from a reputable company with extraordinary standards.
- Pharmaceutical grade CBD is produced in a manner to obtain the purest form of the nutrient and ensure maximum absorption.
- Full spectrum cannabis oil, or FSO, contains the complete range of cannabinoids and terpenes that can be extracted from cannabis. These are the components that are known to have medicinal properties, many of which are still being researched and explored.
Both varieties come in delicious flavors including lemon, mint and orange.
CBD Oil Benefits And Why I Use It Ever Day
1. Relieves My Chronic Pain
One of the many unfortunate symptoms of Hashimoto’s is chronic joint and muscle pain. Most days are good to tolerable but some days are bad.
I am so grateful for CBD oil because it knocks out the pain fast. And if I have a particularly bad area (my knee for some reason) the balm works like a charm.
For me, it’s much more effective than ibuprofen or acetaminophen. In fact, it has been approved in Canada for multiple sclerosis and cancer pain.
My husband is also a big fan of CBD oil for pain management. He suffers from chronic back pain and the CDB drops and the CBD balm have really helped control his pain more than anything else he has tried.
2. Reduces My Anxiety And My Husband’s OCD
According to large population-based surveys, up to 33% of people suffer from anxiety at least one point during their lifetime. That’s one out of every three people!
I have struggled with anxiety my entire life. In fact, I remember being put in a special counseling group in elementary school because of my anxiety. Not only do I tend to worry too much, but I also have social anxiety and panic attacks.
To rub salt in the wound, Hashimoto’s also causes anxiety. It’s like winning the anxiety lotto!
I take 3000 mg of CBD oil when I feel my anxiety ramping up (the higher dose is more effective for me) and it definitely keeps my anxiety in check. I can feel the calming effects within 30 minutes. Plus, it’s a more natural and a safer alternative to drugs such as Klonopin and Xanax.
My husband also struggles with anxiety at times, plus he has OCD. He’s an attorney and sometimes he can obsess about work. He thinks about his cases over and over, playing a mental chess game of legal strategy. This is great for his clients and it’s what makes him an amazing attorney.
Unfortunately, at times, the OCD can be debilitating because the litigation chess game will not end. CBD oil has been a Godsend for him. It calms his mind and stops the obsessive thoughts.
- Studies using animal models of anxiety and involving healthy volunteers clearly suggest an anxiolytic-like effect of CBD. Moreover, CBD was shown to reduce anxiety in patients with social anxiety disorder.
- Effects of cannabidiol (CBD) in generalized social anxiety disorder.
3. Helps Combat My Inflammation
When your body is chronically inflamed, it can cause countless problems. This includes leaky gut syndrome, heart disease, autoimmune disease, skin problems, increased pain and so much more.
With Hashimoto’s, the body mounts an immune reaction against its own thyroid gland tissue, leading to inflammation of the gland and eventually rendering it non-functional. Needless to say, keeping inflammation at bay is critical for Hashimoto’s patients.
Cannabinoids have been proven to have an anti-inflammatory effect in numerous studies. CBD engages with the endocannabinoid system in many organs throughout the body, helping to reduce inflammation systemically. This is good news for people like me.
- Many studies have found that CBD can reduce joint inflammation and other inflammatory pain in rats, without side effects.
- Anti-Inflammatory properties of Terpenoids from Cannabis.
4. Powerful Antioxidant
By now everyone knows how beneficial antioxidants are to the body. They stop free radicals from damaging our DNA and causing other cellular damage.
CBD is an extraordinarily effective antioxidant. It works in conjunction with the endocannabinoid system in our body, which controls cellular regrowth and neurocellular health. In fact, CBD was found to be a more powerful antioxidant than both vitamins C and E.

5. Neuroprotective Properties Means Bye-Bye Brain Fog
If you have ever experienced brain fog, then you know it can make you feel like you are losing your mind. In the throes of my undiagnosed condition, I really thought I had early onset dementia.
Thankfully, medication and supplements have really helped me regain my mental clarity.
But there are still days where I am off my game. Maybe it’s the Hashimoto’s, it could be attributed to a restless night or maybe it’s that I am in my forties—but on those days, I need extra help!
That help comes in the form of CBD oil. Cannabinoids are neuroprotective, meaning that they help maintain brain health. They help protect brain cells from damage, keeping the brain healthy and functioning properly.
Today was actually one of those days where I was off my game. So I took the Full Spectrum CBD Drops and now, as Doc Holliday would say, “I’m right as the mail.”
- Cannabidiol and (−)Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol are neuroprotective antioxidants.
The Bottom Line
CBD oil helps me keep my symptoms in check and it will continue to be an integral part of my Hashimoto’s protocol. It is an incredible natural remedy that fights chronic pain, inflammation, anxiety and protects neural processes. And research on the health benefits of CBD oil is ongoing. As you read this, scientists are still discovering more. It’s an exciting time!
To take advantage of CBD’s benefits, however, you must be sure you select a high quality CBD oil product. Many brands out there are contaminated with pesticides, chemical additives, heavy metals, and processed in such a way that your body doesn’t absorb the CBD. So you really need to be careful.
Because I want consistent top-quality CBD oil that is gluten-free and organic, Bluhm will continue to be my brand of choice.
Do you use CBD oil? If so, what for and how has it benefited you?
