Head Lice Horror
A few years ago my boys, ages 10 & 11 at the time, started to complain that their hair was itching–BADLY. Upon closer inspection, it was very clear what the issue was, LICE! Eek!!
This was my first experience with these evil bloodsucking parasites. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) estimate that there are about 6 to 12 million cases of infestation each year among kids aged between 3 and 11. Unfortunately, we became a stat too.
Mortified, I was on a mission to eradicate them and give my boys some much-needed relief. So I marched into the drugstore on a mission to kill. I bought almost every product the store offered, confident that these suckers were going down.
OTC Lice Treatment
We washed hair, picked hair, combed hair and washed their hair again. I sterilized everything, washed pillows, sheets and used spray on the furniture. For FIVE days and those suckers would not die.
Oh how naive was I….Apparently we were “lucky” enough to be invaded by lice that are resistant to OTC treatments. NOTHING worked.
Have I mentioned that I was VERY pregnant at the time and in full-on nest mode. I had to get rid of these nefarious INVADERS FAST. So I did my research and found a natural lice treatment that worked miraculously fast.
Science-Backed Natural Lice Treatment That Works
The study I ran across investigated the efficacy of two natural substances: tea tree oil and nerolidol against lice and its eggs. The results were amazing–by mixing nerolidol and tea tree oil in the ratio of 1:2 produced 100 % mortality of the lice after 30 minutes!
The same study found that the same ratio caused ovicidal activity as well. This means that the eggs failed to hatch after about 5 days, aside from all head lice being killed in half an hour!
It’s very important to note that tea tree oil alone was not near as effective. The combination of tea tree oil AND nerolidol was proven to be the most effective treatment.
That’s the science behind this powerful natural lice treatment. Now, here is our natural lice treatment plan.
Natural Lice Treatment Plan
- Tea tree oil
- Olive or coconut oil for base oil
- Apple cider vinegar
- Fine tooth comb
- Shower cap
- Gentle shampoo
Pour 10 drops of tea tree oil and 20 drops of nerolidol into 1/4 cup of base oil and then apply the mixture generously to the hair and scalp. Place shower cap over head and leave mixture on head for 1 hour.
Next, combine 1 cup of warm water with 1/2 cup vinegar. Remove shower cap and comb the dead lice and nits out with a comb dipped in vinegar water. Rinse the comb and dip in vinegar water each time you comb lice and nits out.
Finally, wash the hair with gentle shampoo to remove the oil mixture.
Natural Lice Treatment Follow-up
I recommend checking hair daily for at least 7 days after treatment. Additionally, if the infestation was severe or more than one child in the household had lice, repeat the process on day 5.
